Mix Six for Spring

Welcome the shining sun with these beauties. Featuring something special from the super culty and limited Unico Zelo, local favourites Mazza and a hot new Riesling from the Yarra.

Equipo Navazos ‘I Think’ Manzanilla NV (375ml) $25 T/A
Be the first one to realise Sherry is cool again. Lay out the olives and salted almonds and crack open this perfect little bottle for two of Manzanilla. Think freshly baked bread, sea spray and nutty goodness!

Valere Riesling 2014 Yarra Valley $32 T/A
A beautiful and unique expression of Riesling from the Yarra made by the guru that is Dom Valentine. Textured, complex and incredibly delicious.

Domaine Seguinot-Bordot Petit Chablis 2015 $36 T/A
Pristine, crunchy citrus and grapefruit notes, this wine is perfect for the warmer weather. It’s Chardonnay, but not as you know it!

Mazza ‘Bastardo’ Rose 2015 $24 T/A
Pure and lifted with amazing red fruit concentration and a lovely texture. Tis’ the season for Rosé (or Brosé?).

Two Tonne ‘Ziggaurat’ Nouveau Pinot Noir 2016 $35 T/A
Pinot Noir fermented on Riesling and Gewürztraminer skins. Sounds intriguing and it is! Incredibly light and delicate, this wine is just yearning for a picnic. Serve slightly chilled with a board of really good Prosciutto.

Unico Zelo ‘Truffle Hound’ Nebbiolo Barbera 2016 $26 T/A
Very limited and one could label this as a cult wine. Anything made by Unico Zelo is pretty hot right now. Bright, juicy and clean. Just really great booze.

Tins store better, stack better, cool better. You can drink them basking in the sun, or relaxing in the shower. What used to be seen as a vessel for the cheapest lagers, now host some of the world’s greatest craft beers. We have selected six of our favourites for you.

Pirate Life Pale Ale 5.4% Hindmarsh, SA $7 T/A
Bucket loads of US hops, balanced dirty caramel malt, characterful yeast but sessionable on the palate. Pirate Life’s flagship workhorse that fits into any San Diego bar pushes the idea of a can as a ‘mini-keg’ and superior in every way to a bottle.

Colonial Small Ale 3.5% Margaret River, WA $6 T/A
Big on the palate, easy on the booze. A good amount of tangerine and cheeky hints of sweet caramel. The only beer in Australia to feature a 360 degree ‘tuna can’ lid, essentially turning into a cup.

Golden Road ‘Citron’ Saison 5.8%, Los Angeles Southern California, US $9 T/A
Fruity esters are complemented with mild lemon candy notes in this delicate saison bursting with champagne-like effervescence. A classic farmhouse style with a kiss of California sweetness. Perfect shady tree picnic beer.

Oskar Blues ‘Old Chub’ Scotch Ale 8.0%, Longmont Colorado, US $9 T/A
Jaw dropping! Bodacious amounts of malted barley, beechwood-smoked malt and speciality grains. Semi-sweet cocoa, coffee and a wee-bit of smoke. The ‘gateway’ into big dark beers.

Anderson Valley ‘ Briney Melon’ Watermelon Gose 4.2%, Mendocino County Northern California, US $7 T/A
Born from a passion for experimentation, Anderson Valley have quickly established themselves as ‘Lords of Gose’. Thirst-quenching sea salt tartness perfectly balanced with subtle sour watermelon. A harmony of acidity and fruity sweetness with a clean, dry finish. The ultimate ‘shower beer’.

Rodenbach ‘Original’ Flemish Red Ale 5.2%, Roeselare, Belgium $8 T/A
An old-world beer in new-world packaging. A blend of 25% aged & 75% young sour ales, this pantheon of the style shows big tart cherries, light oak, candy and a touch of balsamic.

Discounted six pack price — $40

PRODUCER IN FOCUS: Vasse Felix’s Virginia Willcock

When did you know you wanted to make wine?

When I was 15 years old. My Dad sold the hobby farm we had with a vineyard on it and I didn’t know how to get that vibe back. Growing grapes and turning them into magic juice that made all the adults happy and carefree was something I had to pursue, then I found out you could get a degree in it.

Favourite wine region and why?
Of course it’s Margaret River. Elegant, structured wines are my style and of course a swim in the stunning ocean to feel alive the next day. Nowhere else in the world can deliver both of these at the same level of quality.

Best wine-food combo?
Roast chicken and Chardonnay. Truffle pasta and Nebbiolo. Lasagna and Cabernet.

Desert island drink?
Armagnac, as I can get a lot of beautiful miles out of a bottle.

Interesting fact about Virginia?
I can’t lie.

Favourite music to listen to during vintage?
Vintage is long, it helps to have eclectic taste so I’ll listen to anything and everything, except black and death metal!

To impress friends with your mad bartending skills, pop in to see us and pick up a bottle or three of Hippocampus’ pre-batched individual Negronis. Available in 100ml medicinal bottles, they will make you look like the true professional at home. Bottoms up! $15 – T/A only.

Petition is set to pop-up on Beaufort Street for three days this month as BeauVine Food and Wine Festival comes to life. We’ll be joining the line-up for a weekend of eating and drinking with a dedicated Petition Pinot bar pouring the best from Australia and New Zealand.

Be ready to top your glasses with the likes of Castelli, Warramate, Delamere Naissante and Chad Farm River Run.
